Then a diversified organic raw-milk dairy in northern New England. Even when we lived in New York City, we kept chickens and had a container garden. We moved around a lot, but it looks like farming just kept following us.

Long Family Orchard, Farm & Cider Mill is a family farm, cider mill and pumpkin patch in Commerce Township, Michigan, worked by the Long family since 1876. Drive-thru produce stands sell asparagus from May to June and sweet corn and summer vegetables from July to Labor Day. The cider mill and farm market sell fresh-pressed cider, cinnamon sugar donuts, apples and mums daily through Thanksgiving Eve with no admission charge. From mid-September to November 1, a Fun Farm ticket covers the corn maze, jumping pillows, petting farm and a hayride to the u-pick pumpkin patch.

Wiley Veggie Shed & Farm is a family vegetable farm in Schoolcraft, Michigan, run by Kurt and Caroline Wiley and in the family since 1956. Its farm stand sells sweet corn, tomatoes, peppers, squash, pumpkins, melons, strawberries and fresh flowers, and it opens daily from mid-July through October 31. U-pick runs through the season, with flowers sold by the stem, and high tunnels stretch the harvest earlier and later. The farm also runs a CSA with Thursday pickups.

Wing Farms has worked the Ann Arbor area since James Wing founded it in 1852 — five generations and 205 acres later, Kevin Wing grows corn, soybeans, rye, and famous giant pumpkins, raises farm beef and fresh Thanksgiving turkeys, and sells Christmas trees.
