A Land of Grass

Conrad, MT

A Land of Grass raises grass-fed beef and lamb on native prairie north of Conrad, roughly an hour from both Great Falls and Glacier National Park. The ranch never tills its ground; nearly all of it stays in perennial native vegetation. It also sells fine wool roving and batting. Amaltheia Dairy LLC

Belgrade, MT

Amaltheia Organic Dairy has handcrafted certified organic goat cheese near Belgrade for more than 20 years. The lineup runs to chevre, feta, ricotta, and flavored chevres like roasted garlic and chive and sun-dried tomato, several of them American Cheese Society award winners. The farm feeds its whey to organic hogs and composts the rest, wasting nothing. You'll find the cheeses in Bozeman shops and in Whole Foods and Trader Joe's nationwide.

Applestem Corn Maze/pumpkin patch/sunflowers

Craig, MT

Applestem cuts a 10-acre corn maze into miles of trails each fall along the Craig Frontage Road, near the trout water of the Missouri River. The Scott Blackman family runs it with duck races, a tube slide, a corn tent, and farm animals for kids. The maze opens mid-September through October on Friday evenings and Saturday and Sunday afternoons. General admission is $11 for ages five and up, and younger kids get in free.

Barney Creek Livestock

Livingston, MT

Barney Creek Livestock sells 100% grass-fed beef by the share from a family ranch in Paradise Valley, along the Yellowstone River north of Livingston. Pete and Meagan Lannan run land their family has held since 1900, using regenerative grazing that won Montana's 2022 Leopold Conservation Award for stewardship of soil, water, and wildlife. Beartooth Wagon & Sleigh Rides

Red Lodge, MT

Beartooth Wagon & Sleigh Rides runs horse-drawn trips year-round at the foot of the Beartooth Mountains near Red Lodge, about 60 miles from Yellowstone. Draft horses pull open wagons spring through fall and sleighs once snow falls; winter rides finish with chili, hot chocolate, and bread around a bonfire. Beaverhead Maze & Pumpkin Patch

Dillon, MT

An eight-acre corn maze cut in the shape of Montana, with passport stations at towns across the map, plus a 700-bale straw pyramid maze that changes theme each year. It runs Thursday through Sunday, noon to 8 p.m., mid-September through Halloween, off Highway 41 north of Dillon. The patch grows up to five pumpkin varieties and adds kids' games, a slide, and a bounce house, with restrooms, a gift shop, and concessions on site.

Black Dog Farm

Livingston, MT

Tim and Kira Jarosz started this 30-acre Livingston farm in 2017, raising pastured pork, poultry, and eggs. It's a farrow-to-finish operation built on Idaho Pasture Pigs for marbled, slow-grown pork, with Freedom Ranger meat chickens raised under open sky. The animals live outdoors to root, graze, and range. Black Dog sells its meat and eggs direct, with an online shop and Livingston-area pickup.

Boja Farm grows more than 350 fruit and nut trees on Hergenrider Road near Bridger, including 17 apple varieties plus plums, peaches, cherries, pears, apricots, and grapes. Berry rows add raspberries, mulberries, gooseberries, and currants. The family farms with a chemical-free permaculture approach and also puts in hardneck garlic, shallots, and onions. Orchard and farm tours are offered, and the operation hosts events. Its herb products sell under the On Thyme Gourmet name.

Bozeman Alpaca Traders LLC

Manhattan, MT

Bozeman Alpaca Traders keeps a herd of Suri alpacas on Bates Road in the Gallatin Valley, about 15 miles west of Bozeman. The ranch helped found the Yellowstone Alpaca Breeders Association, the first such group in Montana. Fall visitors get a straw-bale maze, a kids' maze, puzzle mazes, a bungee trampoline, corn bins, a mini-train, hay rides, and pick-your-own pumpkins.

Brigadoon Orchards-That's My Tree

Bigfork, MT

Brigadoon Orchards ran a 'That's My Tree' program near Bigfork, where customers rented a cherry tree — young for the education of it, or mature for the fruit — and had roughly 10 pounds of cherries shipped home. The orchard sat along the east shore of Flathead Lake off Highway 35. The former owner has since sold, and reports indicate the new owners did not continue the program.

Camp 21 LLC

Miles City, MT

Camp 21 sits on the Yellowstone Jewel, a working ranch about eight miles outside Miles City in the Yellowstone River valley. The name marks General Custer's 21st campsite from his 1876 march. The ranch runs history tours, trails, and a motocross track, with a guest house and events center on the grounds. Owners have been adding camps and wedding hosting to the mix.

C&C Alpacas

Common Ground Farm Arlee

Arlee, MT

An organic produce farm in the Jocko Valley at Arlee, on Heart View Lane, that grows vegetables for communities around Missoula and welcomes farm visits. Dude's Montana Peaches

USDA-certified organic peaches, grown in Plains along the Clark Fork in Sanders County and sold both pre-picked and U-pick. Eller's Blueberry Farm

A you-pick and we-pick blueberry farm on Highway 200 in Trout Creek, grown over more than three decades from a handful of bushes to nearly 100 rows. Drummond, MT

Cage-free, free-range eggs from a Drummond operation in Granite County that has scaled up to thousands of hens raised without antibiotics or hormones. Eggs are candled, cleaned, and delivered to grocery stores in Missoula, Butte, and across southwest Montana, sometimes reaching shelves the same day they're laid. The family also sells grass-based Farmer Boy Beef. It's a genuine made-in-Montana producer, not a repackager.

Farmers O'Dell, Inc.

Bigfork, MT

Sweet cherries are the draw at this east-shore Flathead Lake orchard on Highway 35, between the 20- and 21-mile markers near Yellow Bay. Farmers O'Dell opens to U-pickers for a few weeks in June and July, uses natural growing practices, and runs school tours. It sits about 20 miles north of Polson and 12 miles south of Bigfork, and takes cash, check, debit, Visa, and Mastercard.

Glendive, MT

The Farm to Table Store on South Merrill Avenue in Glendive stocks local eggs, beef, lamb, and chicken alongside bulk foods, spices, teas, and seasonal produce from area growers. It leans toward natural, organic, and allergy-friendly stock. The shop occupies a corner of a larger events building, and on Saturdays a farmers market sets up in the parking lot outside.

Fat Robin Orchard & Farm

Polson, MT

A certified-organic orchard on Finley Point overlooking Flathead Lake, in the family since the 1930s. Fat Robin specializes in organic sweet cherry varietals and now tart cherries, along with Macintosh and heirloom Wealthy apples planted by the original homesteader's sister. They also keep wool sheep. U-pick cherries and apples run July through October, by appointment only, so call before heading out.

Field of Screams

Victor, MT

A Halloween haunted attraction set in a three-acre cornfield off Highway 93, about 4.5 miles south of Victor and half an hour south of Missoula. After dark, paths cut through 10-foot corn lead past graveyards, walking zombies, and a chainsaw-wielding character. Daytime hours turn family-friendly, with wagon rides and a mini corn maze for kids. It was named 2024 Haunt of the Year.

Flathead Fresh Orchard

Polson, MT

Flathead Fresh Orchard grows certified organic sweet cherries on Sweet Cherry Lane, off South Finley Point Road near Polson. The fourth-generation grower keeps trees low so pickers can work most of the fruit from the ground, and provides the buckets. During harvest the stand is open Wednesday through Monday afternoons, and the crop runs heavy and easy to reach. Payment is cash or Venmo.

Fritz Corn Maze

Kalispell, MT

A 20-acre corn maze on Birch Grove Road between Kalispell and Columbia Falls, a mile south of Glacier Park International Airport. From mid-September through Halloween the Fritz family opens the maze along with a cow train, culvert slides, a small bale maze, a bale pyramid, a tractor-tire sandbox, and bounce houses. Late October brings a haunted trail through the corn and a haunted barn.

Getman's Cherry Red Orchard

Bigfork, MT

Black sweet cherries are the main crop at this 700-tree orchard on the east shore of Flathead Lake near Yellow Bay, producing 30,000 to 40,000 pounds a year. The Getmans also grow apples, pears, peaches, plums, and raspberries, with U-pick running August through October after the cherries ripen in late July. It's cash only, and they ask that you call ahead before driving out. The operation now includes a vineyard.

Green Bench Orchard

Missoula, MT

Missoula's only USDA-certified organic U-pick apple and raspberry orchard, at the far west end of South Avenue and marked by a water wheel. Raspberries usually ripen in July, apples from early September into mid-October, and the orchard supplies the picking containers. Run by farmer Fred, Green Bench has given thousands of dollars and hundreds of pounds of apples to the Missoula Food Bank since 2020.

Hansen Farms

Polson, MT

Hansen Farms grows sweet cherries on the east shore of Flathead Lake, south of Polson near Yellow Bay. Lambert makes up most of the crop, with Rainier, Van, Sweetheart, and other varieties mixed in. The trees carry a heavy crop low to the ground, so U-pick is easy on the back. Cherries ripen at the end of July and picking runs through August. Reach the orchard off South Finley Point Road, at the end of the lilac hedge.

Hawley Mountain Guest Ranch

McLeod, MT

Hawley Mountain Guest Ranch sits along the Main Boulder River south of McLeod, deep in the mountains north of Yellowstone. The all-inclusive week caps at 20 guests and folds in horseback riding, fly fishing on private Boulder River frontage, jeep rides to a gold-mining ghost town, raft trips on the Yellowstone, and evening cookouts. Meals, lodging, and activities are bundled into one rate.

Healing Waters Ranch LLC

Libby, MT

A ranch on Bobtail Lane outside Libby, in Montana's far northwest, that opens seasonally for pumpkins and hosts events, school tours, group reservations, and wedding parties. It's a separate operation from the Healing Waters fly-fishing lodge in Twin Bridges. Published details are limited beyond its fall and event offerings.

Hockaday Orchards

Lakeside, MT

Hockaday Orchards is a U-pick cherry orchard on the west shore of Flathead Lake, about five miles south of Lakeside, run by the same family for more than a century. Pickers work rows of Lambert, Royal Anne, and Wine cherries during the short harvest, which usually opens in late July and lasts a week or two. Ladders are supplied. Bring flat boxes rather than bags, since packed fruit crushes easily.

J & K Farms

Laurel, MT

J & K Farms works ground on Krug Lane just outside Laurel, in the Yellowstone Valley farm country west of Billings. Business records list it under fruits, vegetables, and produce, operating since 1994. Little else is published online. Call ahead to confirm what's in season and whether they sell direct.

Johnson Nursery and Gardens

Helena, MT

Johnson's Nursery and Gardens has grown bedding plants, herbs, and vegetable starts on McHugh Lane in the Helena Valley since 1976. The family also sells fresh garden produce and honey from their own hives. Each fall the nursery opens a pick-your-own pumpkin patch with a corn maze, bounce house, and a haunted greenhouse that draws Helena families through late September and October.

Johnson's Pumpkin Patch

Helena, MT

Part of Johnson's Nursery and Gardens, a Helena family farm going since 1976, the pumpkin patch opens select fall weekends, Saturdays and Sundays noon to 5. Alongside pick-your-own pumpkins in the field, the farm sells honey from its own hives, produce, herbs, and vegetable starts, and runs a bounce house, school tours, and caramel apples and baked goods from its Cinnamon Ghost Bakery. KT-Farms

Stevensville, MT

A 20-acre family farm and nursery in the Bitterroot Valley near Stevensville, with about five acres in vegetable production grown without synthetic pesticides or herbicides. KT-Farms sells through an on-site farm stand, a CSA program, and U-pick fields. The lineup runs from peas, beans, and tomatoes to squash, root crops, and peppers, plus strawberries, melons, and a limited apple crop, framed by Sapphire and Bitterroot mountain views.

McCafferty Ranch

Belt, MT

McCafferty Ranch has raised cattle on the land near Belt since 1926, now under the fifth generation. The beef is grass-fed and finished on barley and pea sprouts grown in the ranch's own hydroponic setup, with no antibiotics or added hormones. Customers buy eighths, quarters, halves, or whole animals for delivery across Montana, or pick up single cuts at Central Avenue Meats in Great Falls.

Meadowlark Farm

Hamilton, MT

Davin and Julia Athman opened this U-pick pumpkin patch in the Bitterroot Valley in 2014, on Meadowlark Lane south of Hamilton. When the fall patch isn't running, the family raises grass-fed Lowline cattle and sells Montana homegrown beef. The patch opens in mid-to-late September and stays open until the pumpkins sell out. It's a small, family-run operation aimed at local families.

MissoulaMaze

Missoula, MT

A corn maze on Clements Road in Missoula that ran for more than a decade, paired with a petting zoo, pumpkin patch, a shorter maze for younger kids, an obstacle course, and October pony rides. The owners have since announced they won't reopen and put the maze up for sale, so its future is unsettled. Past admission ran $8 for adults and $5 for kids and seniors.

The formulas skip sulfates, synthetic fragrance, and petroleum fillers, and the ranch runs its own FDA-inspected lab following good manufacturing practices. Products ship nationwide and stock regional shops.

Montana ExpoPark

Great Falls, MT

Montana ExpoPark is Great Falls' 133-acre fairgrounds, home to the Montana State Fair every summer since 1931. The grounds hold 35 buildings, a horse-racing track, grandstands, and the Four Seasons Arena. Six original Art Deco structures made the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Beyond the fair, the county-run site hosts rodeos, livestock shows and sales, agricultural exhibits, and concerts through the year.

On Thyme Gourmet turns its own certified organic herbs and hardneck garlic into jarred fresh-herb blends, some folded into olive oil or butter. The small family operation grows, harvests, and hand-packs everything about ten miles south of Bridger and three miles northeast of Belfry. Products carry both organic and Kosher Pareve certification. The herb line grows out of Boja Farm, the family's orchard and garlic operation on Hergenrider Road.

Painted Rocks Winery

Victor, MT

Painted Rocks Winery makes mead, the honey wine, rather than grape wine. Four couples from the West Fork of the Bitterroot drainage started it, naming it for the reservoir near their homes upstream of Victor. The lineup runs to a light mead and a dark mead, sold through retail outlets across western Montana. It's one of the few Montana wineries built entirely around honey.

Parsons Pony Farm

Florence, MT

A small Florence farm that kept gentle retired and rescue ponies and offered hand-led rides for children, both on-site and at parties, reunions, and the Sunday Carousel Farmers' Market from June through September. Owner Suzi Kimcey ran it on Yarrow Road in the Bitterroot Valley. Recent listings mark it as closed, so it may no longer be operating.

Pine Glen Cherry Orchard

Pine Glen grows Flathead cherries along the east shore of the lake on Highway 35, north of Polson. Rocky Creek Farms

Rocky Creek Farm sits in the creek bottomlands east of Bozeman, now farmed by Gallatin Valley Botanical as a certified organic operation. More than 300 apple trees in nine varieties feed a cider press that runs during the fall festival, a Bozeman tradition going back three decades. The ranch stands out as the only one in Montana raising gray animals. Since 2011 the owners have run educational visits that trace fiber from shearing to finished yarn, hats, scarves, and felted goods. The creekside setting doubles as a quiet spot to spend time with the herd.

SpiritWorks Herb Farm

Whitefish, MT

SpiritWorks grows and wildcrafts more than 160 culinary and medicinal herbs on ten forest-edged acres between Whitefish and Kalispell, certified organic by the Montana Department of Agriculture. The on-site apothecary sells small-batch tinctures, salves, infused oils, herbal teas, and honey made from what the farm raises. A year-round retreat center sleeps 17 across nine rooms, and farm tours and the store run by appointment. Apprenticeships and herbal boot camps round out the season.

Spotted Bear Vineyards & Lavender Farm

Spotted Bear Vineyards and Lavender Farm works a small planting on Finley Point, on the east side of Flathead Lake near Polson. The vines, first put in during 1983, are Marquette and L'Acadie Blanc, sold to Montana vintners including White Raven Winery in Columbia Falls. Summer brings cut lavender and flowers, plus July distillation classes and U-pick cherries. A cabin among the rows rents through VRBO and Airbnb.

Sterling Cattle Corn Maze

Vaughn, MT

Sterling Cattle Company raises Red Angus at Wolf Creek and runs a feedlot near Vaughn, then opens a 20-acre corn maze each fall off U.S. Highway 89. The maze is cut into six-foot stalks with plenty of dead ends, joined by a smaller hay maze, a net maze, hay-mountain slides, and hay jumps. Weekday school field trips run late September through October by reservation, at $5 per student.

Sunrise Pack Station

Bozeman, MT

Horse-drawn sleigh and hay rides run across the farm on Manley Road at the edge of Bozeman, winding through open fields and along the river to a quiet bend beneath the Bridger Mountains, where riders gather at a campfire for hot chocolate. The same outfit runs city carriage rides through Bozeman's historic districts and leads multi-day horse pack trips into Yellowstone. Daytime sleigh rides depart hourly, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Sweet Pickin's Pumpkin Patch

Sweet Pickin's Pumpkin Patch runs a large U-pick field along Columbia Falls Stage Road, worked by the DeVries family since around 2001. Kids ride barrel cars and cow trains, bounce on giant pillows, and wander petting pens while parents pick pumpkins. The patch opens daily from September 20 through October 30 and pulls visiting families from as far as Browning, Polson, and Great Falls.

Laurel, MT

The seasonal pumpkin patch at T&C Farms outside Laurel draws hundreds each fall for hayrides, a corn maze, and pick-your-own pumpkins in Yellowstone County. The Orchard at Flathead Lake is a certified organic, second-generation family orchard on the lake's east shore near Bigfork, in the family since 1976 and certified organic since 2006. More than 500 cherry trees grow alongside apples, peaches, pears, plums, vegetables, and herbs. Everything sold is grown or made on site, from jams and syrups to a cherry BBQ sauce that has drawn national notice. The orchard also hosts weddings and gatherings.

The Wald Ranch

Lodge Grass, MT

The Wald Ranch is a working cattle-and-horse ranch near Lodge Grass that takes overnight guests, with Lodge Grass Creek running through the property on the Crow Reservation. Guests eat breakfast at the family's kitchen table, wander to the barn or down to the creek, and see ranch work carry on around them.
