About This Farm
Hāloa ʻĀina is restoring native dryland forest on Hawaii Island, one of the rarest ecosystems on earth, after more than a century of cattle grazing pushed it toward collapse. The project has planted over a million sandalwood, or 'iliahi, trees across a preserve of thousands of acres, funding the work by harvesting oil from old and dying trees rather than clearing new ones. Volunteers help plant seedlings, and the group runs educational tours and presentations on native forestry.
