About Anchor Creek Elk Ranch at Thunder Bay Resort
The elk preserve at Thunder Bay Resort in Hillman, Michigan, holds a resident herd of Rocky Mountain elk on 160 acres of the resort's 350-acre property along the Thunder Bay River. Draft horses pull carriages into the preserve in autumn and sleighs in winter, ending at a log cabin where a five-course dinner is cooked on 125-year-old wood cook stoves and served with up to six wines. The resort also has an 18-hole golf course, suites, villas, chalets and an RV park. Jack Mathias first developed the property's golf course in 1971, and Matt Smith took over after Mathias died in 2024.
