Keith Arsenault has run this 14-acre pick-your-own orchard on a hilltop above the Pioneer Valley since 1985. Ragged Hill grows more than 30 apple varieties — Honeycrisp, Cortland, Gravenstein, and newer crosses like Ever Crisp — alongside pears, peaches, nectarines, and pick-your-own raspberries. The farm presses its own cider and bakes on weekends. Apple season runs into October, with the orchard open seven days a week.

North Brookfield

Brookfield Orchards has stayed family-owned and operated since 1918, and fall apple picking remains the draw at this North Brookfield farm. The snack bar's apple dumplings — served warm with vanilla ice cream and cheddar cheese — have their own following, and the country store carries the rest of a classic New England farm stand's stock. It's a seasonal operation built around one thing done well.

Warren

Breezelands Orchards has stayed in the Tuttle family since 1896, five generations working the same 100 acres of Central Massachusetts apple trees. The farm stand sells cider, pies, local honey, cheese, and maple syrup alongside award-winning cider donuts, and pick-your-own apples run from Labor Day weekend through Columbus Day. Hawk Hill Orchards has grown apples, peaches, and plums on Carleton Road since Kent Stowe took over the family homestead in 1997, continuing a fruit stand his parents started decades earlier. The name comes from hawks that nest on the property. Pick-your-own visitors come mostly for the Northern Spy apples — an old variety that grows unusually large here, juicy enough for cider and firm enough to hold up in a pie.

Monson

Echo Hill Orchards in Monson grows apples, peaches, pears, and pumpkins for pick-your-own visitors, then turns a good share of that fruit into wine on site — more than a dozen varieties, all made from fruit grown on the property. The tasting room also pours flights of spirits and sangria built around their Macoun apples. Cider donuts show up once the fall picking season gets going.

Sterling

The Chandler family has grown apples, blueberries, pumpkins, and nectarines on this 100-acre Sterling farm since 1912, now in its fifth generation. The on-site bakery turns out cider donuts, turnovers, and pies, and the farmstand kitchen serves soups, sandwiches, and weekend breakfast alongside seasonal picking.

Lancaster

Apple Lane Orchard grows heritage apples, including Cortland, McIntosh, and Gravenstein trees planted since the Flint family founded the orchard in the early 1800s. Current owner Dayna Gant, who took over in 2000, runs it as a pick-your-own orchard alongside a Dutch sport horse operation on the same hilltop property in rural Lancaster.

Lunenburg

Birchwood Orchard is an apple orchard on Old Turnpike Road (Route 124) in Mason, a hill town in New Hampshire's southwest corner. Orchards up this way open picking around Labor Day and run through October. A farm website appears to be under construction but isn't live yet, so check locally for the varieties on offer and current picking hours.

Hadley

Kielbasa Orchards grows apples along Bay Road in Hadley, with a second production orchard across the town line in Amherst. The farm runs pick-your-own picking plus a roadside stand and sells wholesale fruit to area markets.

Sutton

Keown Orchards grows apples on McClellan Road in Sutton, next to Foppema's Farm in the same pocket of Worcester County orchard country. Its old web domain is now parked for sale, and no current listing confirms whether pick-your-own hours still run.

Greenville

Washburn's Windy Hill Orchard opens for pick-your-own apples each September and October, with more than 700 trees on Mason Road in Greenville. The farm also cuts a five-acre corn maze, grows a pumpkin patch, and fries apple cider donuts it bills as the best in New Hampshire. Free weekend hayrides, farm animals, and a gift shop stocking local maple syrup and honey round out the fall season.

Berlin Orchards traces back 50 years to Chedco Farm, renamed in 1995 after Barry O'Brien expanded the property's apple, pear, and peach production across 200 rolling acres. Visitors pick Macs, Macoun, Jonagold, Mutsu, and Honeycrisp in season, then work through cider donuts, pumpkins, a hayride to the orchard, and a small petting zoo. Carlson Orchards has grown apples on this Harvard property since 1936, and the family operation now runs a hard cider taproom alongside its farm stand, pouring the full current lineup of Carlson-made ciders.
