The United Society of Shakers at Sabbathday Lake is the last active Shaker community in the world, founded in the 1780s on Route 26 in New Gloucester. Members still sell herbs, baskets, woodenware, and handwoven goods much as their predecessors did, and the museum holds roughly 13,000 artifacts across fourteen historic buildings. The 1794 meetinghouse still hosts public Sunday worship, and around 10,000 visitors tour the village each year.
