Sugar Roots Farm is a nonprofit working farm in Algiers, founded in 2014 by Sharessa Garland. Kids and families come for field trips, birthday parties, gardening and livestock lessons, horsemanship instruction, and hands-on time with goats, horses, and ponies. The farm also collects food waste from New Orleans households to feed its animals and build compost, folding a city recycling problem into its own operation. Memberships now cover unlimited visits.
