Platte City

Pumpkins Etc. keeps admission free at its you-pick patch outside Platte City, north of Kansas City. Beyond the pumpkins, the farm grows thousands of mums and stocks Indian corn, gourds, and bittersweet for fall decorating. Kids climb on dump trucks and an excavator, run a hay maze and corn maze, and play in a playhouse. It's open Friday through Sunday during the season.

Lawrence

Schaake's grows its pumpkin patch on 28 acres carved out of a working 1,400-acre family farm, an operation that started as a 4-H project and just marked its 50th season. Admission and parking are free, and so is the hayride out to the patch — you pay only for the pumpkins you pick.
