About This Farm

Sylvester Manor Educational Farm stewards 236 acres on Shelter Island that were home to the indigenous Manhansett people for millennia and later became the most intact remnant of a former slaveholding plantation north of Virginia — held by eleven generations of one family from 1652 to 2014. Today the nonprofit runs a working farm, a 1737 Manor House, an Afro-Indigenous Burial Ground, walking trails, youth programs, sculpture exhibits, and Shakespeare at the Manor, donating tens of thousands of dollars in food to local families.
