The D&H Stornetta family has run cattle on this 277-acre dairy ranch above Point Arena for more than a century, and still grazes the land today. Most of the surrounding property, 7,924 acres, was donated in 2005 and is now the Point Arena-Stornetta unit of the California Coastal National Monument, protecting habitat for the Point Arena mountain beaver and California red-legged frog along the Garcia River estuary.
